Introduction

Owned by the Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group, AliExpress is an international online retail platform mostly used by independent small-to-medium businesses, factories, and trading companies in China and other Asian countries to sell affordable products such as clothing and electronics directly to online customers worldwide.

What to Buy

An offshoot of the enormous multinational B2B marketplace, Alibaba, AliExpress was founded in 2010 as a separate platform to address the needs of international business-to-consumer (B2C), consumer-to-consumer (C2C), cloud computing, payment services, and e-commerce drop shipping.

A transaction-based retail website which allows smaller buyers to buy small quantities of goods at wholesale prices, AliExpress.com sellers can either be companies or individuals directly connecting Chinese or Asian businesses with global buyers (as opposed to Alibaba, which connects Chinese wholesale businesses to other global wholesale businesses, or Taobao Marketplace which is its domestic Chinese C2C portal). In short, AliExpress is almost exactly like the global marketplace eBay where you can buy products “as is” from merchants in China purchased directly on the platform.

Having true international reach, AliExpress has regional multi-language versions of its site in Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Hebrew, and Polish. In fact, it is the most visited e-commerce website in Russia and the 10th most popular website in Brazil.

Most AliExpress products are shipped from China but certain popular, high volume items may be shipped from a store’s local warehouse or distribution office in your local country (if available) for faster shipping and delivery times. Some of the countries where some of the bigger e-commerce stores have distribution facilities include the United States, Russia, Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy, UK, UAE, Brazil, Germany, and France.

To start shopping on AliExpress.com, you first need to create an account by going to Aliexpress.com or downloading their AliExpress App for Android or Apple devices and clicking on the “Sign Up” button. After confirming your email address, you can now start shopping and completing your orders on AliExpress. As a new user, the site will also most likely throw in a bonus discount coupon for use on your first purchase order.

Shopping on AliExpress is similar to shopping on eBay. Simply type in a keyword or phrase in the Search Box at the top of the site’s homepage or click on one of the many categories from their main menu to start browsing. Select from the hundreds of sub-categories to get a product listing and upon entering the product page of your choice, just click “Add To Cart” to save the item for checkout.

Pretty much anything under the sun can be bought in this gigantic marketplace, covering categories such as: Women’s Clothing; Men’s Clothing; Luggage & Bags; Shoes; Phones & Accessories; Computer & Office; Security & Protection; Consumer Electronics; Jewelry & Watches; Home & Garden; Home Appliances; Toys & Hobbies; Kids & Baby; Sports & Outdoors; Beauty, Health & Hair; Automobiles & Motorcycles; Home Improvement; Novelty & Special Use; Tools; Weddings & Events; Home Improvement; Furniture; and many more.

As is usually the case with products manufactured and sold from China, when it comes to quality, it is important to take note that while prices are from 50% to 80% below the cost of branded items you’re familiar with; what you will find on AliExpress are mostly generic, mass-produced goods that are at best, high quality reproductions, and at worst, cheap knockoffs. Also beware that anyone in China can sell on AliExpress which means that there may be random re-sellers peddling wares with questionable or inconsistent representation.

That is why before checking out an item on AliExpress, it is good practice to peruse the helpful vendor reliability features on the product page such as the Feedback Rating of the seller, preferably one above 4.5; number and favorability of Customer Reviews where over 100, thoughtfully written reviews is a good gauge; and the Number of Orders where the total of units bought is also a good indicator of the seller’s reliability at fulfilling orders.

Once you’re ready to checkout, just click on the “Checkout” button to fill out your billing and shipping information.

If you’re checking out using the desktop version of AliExpress, the following payment methods are accepted globally: Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Discover, Diners Club and American Express credit cards; PayPal; Wire Transfer; Webmoney; Yandex.Money; Western Union; QIWI; DOKU; Mercado Pago; Boleto; bancontact; TEF; iDeal; Giropay; Sofort Banking; Carte Bancaire (Carte Blue); Przelewy24; SMS Payment in Russia (MTC, MegaFon, Beeline, TELE2); Cash Payment (Euroset, Syvaony, Russian Post); and AliExpress Pocket.

Via the AliExpress App, only the following payment methods are allowed: Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Discover, Diners Club and American Express credit cards; PayPal; QIWI; Boleto; bancontact; iDeal; Przelewy24; SMS Payment in Russia (MTC, MegaFon, Beeline, TELE2); and AliExpress Pocket.

AliExpress guarantees that there is practically zero risk of outright fraud particularly if you pay through the more secure methods such as credit card and PayPal, and more especially because of their Buyer Protection program (discussed below).

What’s more, for certain transactions and countries, the site is also protected by 3-D Secure software, an XML-based protocol designed to be an additional security layer for online credit and debit card transactions with the intention of improving the security of Internet payments. When the cardholder makes a purchase with a participating merchant, a pop-up appears demanding that the cardholder activate the card by entering a password and personal information.
